Severstal-Metiz completed construction of a new water processing cycle

The group of enterprises “Severstal-Metiz” (part of “Severstal Russian Steel” division) completed one of major investment projects of 2011, construction of a new water processing cycle for a more efficient equipment cooling on the Cherepovets steel wire production facilities.

Previously existing mini-cycles, where mills were cooled down by the intermediate heat exchangers and turnaround water, have exhausted their possibilities. An installation of German mills as part of the drawing equipment modernization program is planned at the Cherepovets facilities which (along with pre installed) require more efficient cooling.

New water processing cycle has been designed by experts from Cherepovets basing on the experience of their colleagues from “Severstal-Metiz” Volgogrand branch and “CherMK”. Nineteen contractor organizations, from Cherepovets, St. Petersburg and Moscow, took part in construction. The cycle construction proceeded under the conditions of operating production, without stopping the equipment. In total, over three kilometers of pipelines (500mm in diameter) were laid; ten pumps with total capacity 2.5 MW were set up; three-sectioned ventilating water cooling tower was reconstructed.

The cycle is notable for high productivity, up to 1800 m ³ per hour, with water cooling from 38 ° to 28 ° C; it was launched in mid July. At the moment, connecting mills and setting up automatic control systems is being completed. The cycle is able to provide water with the demanded temperature for all of the equipment of the shop, including new mills, which are going to be installed in near future.

“As a part of the large-scale modernization program we have implemented one of the major investment projects – creation of a better water processing cycle. Construction was completed on time. In September the installations of the new wire-drawing facilities will start, for which we are ready to provide efficient cooling”, said Oleg Veter, Director General of “Severstal-Metiz”, JSC.
