Severstal sponsors Museums of the Russian North charitable programme

The Museums of the Russian North programme is devised and sponsored by Severstal, one of the world’s leading steel and mining companies, to support the development of regional museums in northern Russia. The following organisations and projects were judged by an expert panel to be the most deserving of funding:

The Novgorod State Arts and Culture Museum for their Cultural Heritage of Novgorod Monasteries project
The Republic of Karelia Museum of Fine Arts for their Reflection of Eternity project
The Kizhi State Historical-Architectural and Ethnographic Museum-Preserve for their ReAnimation. Museum Animation project
The Komi Republic National Gallery for their Vision of the Territory (Komi – through the eyes of artists) project
The Cherepovets Museum Association for their Virtual Cherepovets Art Museum project

These organisations will receive funding to support the delivery of their winning projects. The Museums of the Russian North project competition is sponsored by Severstal, with CAF Russia as an organising partner. The total competition fund is 2 million rubles, with a maximum of 500,000 rubles allocated to any single project.

The competition identifies and supports the most deserving projects aimed at improving regional art museums, developing relations between museums and other cultural and educational institutions, and creating and supporting new museum projects.

There were a total of 22 applications for the competition from 21 cities across north-west Russia.

Winners of the first Museums of the Russian North competition held in 2008 included museums from Karelia, Komi, the Vologda Region and Arkhangelsk.
