Severstal Resources holds competition for mining students
Severstal Resources, the mining division within Severstal, one of the world’s leading steel and steel-related companies, has held a competition open to students at mining colleges in Russia in order to recruit young professionals.
Anna Butova, manager, HR Department, commented: “We attach great importance to promoting the image of the mining and metallurgy sector to students, and making our company an attractive employer to them. Instead of customary presentations, we have decided to get our students involved in the work of one of our leading business units, Karelian Pellet. Students were asked to come up with a solution to the problem of downtime in the joint operation of dump trucks and power shovels.”
The competition was staged alongside the International Mining and Industrial Forum, Minex 2012. The jury who judged the students’ solutions included production managers and technical directors as well as directors for strategic development and human resources at Severstal Resources.
The judges from Severstal Resources highly commended the quality of the solutions presented as well as the strong presentation skills of the participants, who were all awarded prizes. The winners were invited to the Severstal Resources’ head office for an interview, while the runners-up were awarded an annual subscription to Harvard Business Review.
