Russian metal & steel market participants: meeting in a month!

2013 will bring some serious changes in the Russian steel and metal market. A number of big investment projects are going to be implemented throughout the year. NLMK-Kaluga plant in Kaluga Region and UMMC-Steel plant in Tyumen will be launched in the beginning of the year; Long Product Mill Balakovo will enter the steel and rolled steel market in the middle of the year. In November a new electrometallurgical mini-mill will be opened in Ivanovo Region, which will also have its impact on regional distribution of reinforcing bar consumption.

As to coated rolled products, it has been recently reported about a few coated long product-manufacturing facilities that are being constructed in Moscow region and near-by areas.

Mechel and Evraz are going to put on stream new rail and beam shops.

Next year’s consumption of ferrous products is supposed to expand. Due to the increased number of pipes purchased by Gazprom the capacity of the Russian pipe market will probably grow by 1 million tons. For another thing, the year of 2013 starts the period of infrastructure modernization in the run-up to the World Cup’2018. It is planned to lay 7000 km of highways and 2000 km of railways, which will connect 6 out of 13 host cities. Trains running at 200 km/h will run between Moscow, Kharkov, Rostov-on-Don, Krasnodar, Adler, between Moscow and Yaroslavl, and of course Western Europe and Ukraine.

In addition Vladimir Putin set a task to provide 100 million square meters of housing by 2016 and 142 million by 2020.

At the same time foreign steel suppliers and manufacturers will have more possibilities on the Russian market since Russia joined the WTO.
